Ahhhh, sweet, sweet photography. There is simply nothing better than getting behind the lens each and every day. ...

But it’s not always straight-forward. There are many tips and tricks that get engagement, turn followers into clients, and using photography to not only get likes but to drive your bottom line.

Which is why I am SO excited about today’s episode where I am digging into the real life, behind the scenes those instagram photos. This is another session of Ask Jenna Anything dedicated SOLELY to one topic: photography! Today I am answering YOUR most raw, real-life questions about photography. Ready to attract your dream clients, fill your calendar, and get your best photos yet?! Let's do it!

Tune in to hear me answer these questions below!

Christine D: Can I photographer make 6 figures by NOT selling educational classes and such?

Shannon R: How do you convince clients to hire your associate photogs instead of you?

Kari G: I would love to hear more about your Photography...what resources did you use when you were first learning, what tips or recommendations do you have for new photographers?

Elizabeth M: I would love to hear more background on the educational/courses side of your business... What was your first ever course? How did the launch go? Did you build up an audience via your photography business to launch to initially? :) Really just ANY advice about transitioning a business from client work to also offering education on your industry!

Starr M: I want to know more about coping with competition and copycatting. I live in a small town and notice that everyone in the creative industry copies. I live in a community of 1200 and find alot of copycatting going on with other photographers in the industry. If I put out a wood box for my clients, then so does everyone else. If I add an item to my pricelist, so do they. If I change all my wedding packages to 8 hours so do they. I have been just looking the other way, supporting them and being nice and focusing on the next thing for myself...should I keep doing this, or what?

Meredith G: know we talk a bunch about your business but i would love to get back to the genesis of it all, how photography makes you feel how you've changed as a photographer.

Ashley R: -Information about second photographers(how much to pay them, what to expect of them)?

Ashely R: -When should photographers raise their prices?

Brooke J: How did you book 25 weddings in one year? What does serving your bride and groom look like? I'm so interested in hearing more about your photography business growth. I'm currently at a place where I built up my photography business doing all kinds of shoots since 2014 but I have been working full time as a teacher. I'm feeling led to leave my job so I resigned and am now returning to photography full time but focusing on families and weddings. I would love to grow my clients and get my name out there for more weddings.

Shannon K: What freebies can different groups offer? By different groups I mean wedding planners, cake artists, florists, non wedding photography - just an idea or suggestion I get so hung up on what to give as a freebie.

Sandy S: How to book destination weddings/elopements

Mancy C: Do you suggest Styled shoots for photographers to build portfolios?! Any and all details on styled shoots appreciated!

Kari G: I would love to hear more about your Photography...what resources did you use when you were first learning, what tips or recommendations do you have for new photographers? THANK YOU for being you and sharing so much with us!!! You inspire me to keep pushing forward every day!!

Cassie Pannier I'm a wedding calligrapher/stationer, second shooter in training, and starting a wedding creative VA business... I just love the wedding industry in general, I guess. My question is geared more towards the VA side of things, but have you ever "cold-emailed" dream clients in hopes that they would book you? And as I'm sure you receive cold emails all the time... What are some examples of what has worked for you as the recipient of these emails?

goodvibesricci Will you ever have a course on how to be an amazing photographer like you! Like for beginners, your tips on how to be a productive photographer following the bride and groom around without getting in the way but also being there enough to get those intimate shots.. I know you have a course with brit + co, which I am buying Asap but something like photography on location 101 from your prospective would be amazing.

anjie_roseI would love to know what camera you started taking pictures with at first and what lens? Also how did you learn about different lenses and how to take good pictures? Cause girl yo pictures are good!

jneb225How’d you get your first paying photography gig

britneycampbell.bizI'd love some photo tips for a camera shy person. Like how you use the props, what else could work?

And, as always, if you have questions for me, I am CONSTANTLY checking our Goal Digger Podcast Insiders FB group and Goal Digger Instagram account to make sure I am answering YOUR questions. You guys are the fire behind this podcast, and I want to hear from y-o-u!

Actress, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Caitlin Crosby knows a thing or two about inspiring others. Growing up in Hollywood and in a family that lived and breathed the entertainment industry, Caitlin has been immered in “success” since early on in her life.

But she felt called to more-- helping others embrace their so-called imperfections, changing our perspective to see flaws as beautiful. Caitlin started giving and selling keys with inspiring messages like FEARLESS, BELIEVE or INSPIRE as jewelry. Her company, The Giving Keys have been sold at Nordstrom, Ron Robinson, Starbucks and over 1,400 other retail stores around the world. ...

But what happens when you “make it”? What is the hidden side of success that creates vulnerability?

Have you ever gotten everything you’ve ever wanted… and still felt a little stuck? I am so thankful for the openness of this incredible woman, and I can’t wait for you to hear her *real*, raw story.

Apr 4, 2018

All my photography Goal Diggers always ask me “how did you book 25 weddings your first year and match your salary so you could make the leap?” I get asked about this SO much and it’s a part of my story that I sometimes breeze over because I’m often on a webinar or speaking at an event and don’t have the time to really dive into it. So today, I thought I’d spill the beans once and for all!

So here are some of the strategies I used to book clients while having no experience and the secret to how the heck you find people who will pay you to do what you love and help you get the courage and the ability to make the giant leap into full-time entrepreneurship.

In this episode you'll hear:

How I set myself up for success with my side hustle

The importance of branding and social media marketing

The strategy behind booking clients

Marketing yourself in an authetnic, unforgettable way

Pricing for profit

I think sometimes people are looking for a magic quick fix easy answer for how to turn your side hustle into a full-time gig. But the truth is - you have to hustle. No idea was too small, every effort was worth pursuing and you have to work hard. That said, along with the hard work there are some fool-proof strategies that I shared in this episode to ensure you are seen, heard, and HIRED.

Well, Goal Diggers, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly on our vision board, but God had a plan, and everything has fallen into place so perfectly. The big life change is…. we’re moving to Minnesota! Duluth, Minnesota to be exact. That’s right, Drew and I will be moving 6 hours away from our current home and community, and we couldn’t be more excited. But many people are asking:

Why are we moving away from Fort Atkinson?

What prompted the big move?

What does our new house look like?

When are we moving?

What does this mean for business?

And ultimately, why we decided to move away from friends, our gym, our home?

The truth is, there is a lot of behind the scenes of our lives that you don’t always see in social media, and today I am walking you through a more personal story of why we are moving across states somewhat abruptly… I wanted to share a little bit about how this big move transpired and how God’s hand was in every little piece of it and also what our plan is going to be moving forward! This is a HUGE life change for us, Goal Diggers, and I am so excited to let you in on the secrets behind it!

Any advice on moving far distances?! Our last move was only 10 miles, and now this one is across states! If you have any tips, head over to @goaldiggerpodcast on instagram and give me your best moving hacks! Because WE NEED THEM.

THE REALITY OF GOING VIRAL: The true story of how we (accidentally) created viral content, grew our following, and got national press... Simply by being who we are.

In case you missed it, our marriage has been on the national (and international!) stage as a post of us in swimsuits went viral. We've gained followers, saw a boost of an engagement, and grew our business all within one whirlwind week.

Sound like a great gig? It was.... and wasn't. In this episode, I tell you everything you need to know about going viral. The wins, the losses (may or may not have gotten emotional reading the "mean comments" on air...), and the final outcome. Was it worth it? It was. Did it have downsides? You bet. And I'm about to fill you in on ALL of it.

If you're on the quest to create viral content, this episode is for you!

When people ask me what I do, I always pause and ask myself: “Do they realllly want to know or are they just asking to be kind.” I’m a: wedding photographer, a podcaster, and online marketing educator, I am a public speaker, I have an island rental unit on Maui, I’m a marketing consultant, I sell watercolor prints, I have an online digital template shop, I do brand collaborations on social media… should I continue?

The truth is, if that list hasn’t made it clear: I am passionate about more than one thing and I’ve been lucky enough to pursue each passion while also driving profits into my business because of how I’ve managed those passions.

Where do you start when you have a bunch of good ideas and you want to do them all? Let’s address this because starting is usually the hardest thing... In this episode, I will teach you how to pivot, chase multiple passions, AND create profit.

One of the BEST things about being multi-passionate and having a multifaceted business means that if one branch of my business isn’t performing well or I need a break from it, my business won’t fail. I am not tied to just one piece of my business but have many angles contributing, taking the pressure off of focusing on ONE thing.

In this episode you'll find how you can balance being a multi-passionate human being. Remember those things you’re passionate about, curious about, those aren’t by chance. Those might be your calling.

Kathryn is one of the most invested, genuine, and authentic people in the world, and today she is telling us allllllll about the ebbs and flows of her career path and how YOU can transition with your work. If you are feeling complacent or trapped in a box in your career, you need to listen to this! You CAN dream big dreams and evolve-- you are not “one thing”-- you are limitless. Let’s dig in, shall we?

A year and a half ago I had NO team. It was just me, trying to run every aspect of my business. For SO long I had my grip so tight on control: wanting to control every thing from my email inbox to my social media strategy from photography, finances, and the list goes on… while I was making it happen, it wasn’t easy and in reality I was stunting my own growth simply because I was too proud to let someone in.

Then I learned how to hire a team. But this is where the real lesson started: how do you bring that team together and promote teamwork, creative thinking, and problem solving?

And I figured it out.

Goal Diggers, we are talking about how YOU can hire a team and grow your business in the process. We are covering everything from:

-The questions to ask your team to ensure you're on the same page

-How to delegate in a way that empowers

-How to pass along ownership (and watch your business grow in the process!)

-The secret to growth and getting feedback in a comfortable way

-Ensuring that your team prioritizes their work well

So whether you have ONE VA or you’re thinking about adding to a growing team, I want to talk about ways you can create a team culture and what that can look like as your business grows. One of the best gifts is being able to run a business that not just affords my life but supports other women and their families plus I have a TEAM of women helping me live out my mission while they are chasing their dreams in tandem. You want in on the secrets? Join in!

PSST: You don't want to miss the freebie in this episode

So let's say you have a side hustle and you're wanting to turn it into a full-time gig? How exactly do you do you grow your business to that point? Where do you invest your money? How many hours do you work? What does that transition truly look like? How do you make sure your finances, branding, team, taxes, and, heck, YOURSELF, are ready to make the leap? Let's just say there are a lot of questions that small business owners are asking. So today we decided to chat with Jaclyn Johnson of Create and Cultivate-- a brilliant business woman who turned her side hustle into a mega successful (crazy impactful) full-time gig. And her business is all about, well, exactly the questions we just mentioned.... giving small business owners a place to ask their "dumb questions" and teaching entrepreneurs how to collaborate and share their secrets. In this episode we hear Jaclyn's entrepreneurship journey from crazy highs (being a social media strategy prodigy) to crazy low lows (losing her job when the economy crashed), all the way to splitting up with her business partner, starting fresh, and building the company of her dreams. Her story is wildly inspiring and if that isn't enough to motivate you, I don't know what is. This story will remind you that *no one* has it all figured out, and life is a whole lot easier, more fulfilling, and joyful when we Create and Cultivate. Together. Goal Diggers, welcome, Jaclyn Johnson!

Hey Goal Diggers! “Ask Jenna Anything” Episodes are BACK, and better than ever. I fielded your questions from both the Goal Digger Insiders FB group and the Goal Digger instagram (if you’re not hanging out there, you’re totally missing out!)

I was absolutely floored by the amount of responses I got from you guys, and decided to approach this round of “Ask Jenna Anything” with a twist-- instead of the usual smorgasbord of questions, I have grouped them by category! I am still letting you call the shots and am fully covering ALL the nitty gritty details, but in a more focused, topic-specific way! I am super excited about this shift and can’t wait to hear what you think!

You all know I am a branding freak, which is why I’m so stinking excited about this episode!

I truly believe branding yourself and your business well is the single most impactful thing you can do for growth, but I know it can be confusing and frustrating at times. Which is exactly why I am so excited to dig through your “Ask Jenna Anything” branding-related questions and go through a crash course in Jenna Kutcher branding 101! Let’s do it!

TO HEAR MY ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS BELOW, TUNE IN!

Margaret S: How to market yourself without feeling like you’re being pushy/bragging/ too aggressive?

Rachel W: How do you create so many unique domains for your different downloads and other offerings?

Sydney jade creative (Instagram): would love to know how to share my story/ create engaging content that attracts my tribe. How can I write killer copy like you do to share your story, Jenna?!

Lazel farm (Instagram): Would love to learn more about storytelling for your website, connecting with clients, and being your true self. I can’t seem to make the connection to being more authentic online. How do you make the jump from being stiff to more authentic online

Alexis R: How do you feel about stock photos for blog posts? Are they valuable or cheesy?

Mary B: My question: I have a blog, coaching program, an small online Shopify store...and am researching starting a podcast. They are all "mine" under my husband and my name. Question, all three are not branded the same....is it too confusing and not "niche" enough?

Emily D: you talk about marketing to your ideal client. But what about when your business is new needs to grow/build clientele? Should we start with marketing broadly and then narrow down marketing when the business is more established?

Melissa M: I would love to learn more about branding and search engine optimization! It’s like a foreign language... what’s the most important steps? Is there someone you know who rocks with this? Would love to hear more on this!

Serena P: I'm just unsure of how to start and how to find my voice. I don't really know what my "jenna 5" would be, how do I find that?

Carolyn M: I am currently running two separate social media accounts. One for business, one personal. I don’t think I want to merge the accounts, but I’m struggling with how much personal to share on my business account to make me personable yet protect privacy. How do you decide how much of “you” to share while still maintaining a healthy level of privacy?

Awwww, podcasting. What a world. I had to face it, it was time to dig into the journey of starting a podcast, building a brand, climbing the charts, and growing your business in tandem. The truth is, there is A LOT to say about the world of podcasting, and I couldn't think of anyone better to interview than the host of "Don't Keep Your Day Job", Cathy Heller. I recently guested on Cathy's show and was struck by her passion and growth of her podcast! (Fun fact: we were BOTH recently featured by iTunes on the top 10 shows to listen to in 2018!)

Cathy is a inspiration-- and she is also a brilliant business woman and podcaster. I knew she would be open about the nitty gritty process of starting a podcast, and she did not disappoint.

Tune into to hear:

-How to know if you should start a podcast

-Why naming a podcast feels like naming a child. (But, actually!)

-How to get big name guests on your show

-Making an impact with every episode

-How to poll your audience and give them what they want

-Why our first episodes embarrass us AND make us proud

-The mystery of the podcast algorithm

-And allllll the behind the scenes logistics of starting a podcast

I hate to say the cliche of "and so much more", but TRULY, this episode is packed with inspiration, motivation, and advice for every career. Cathy is just so refreshing that her positivity seeped far beyond the world of podcasting! If you are looking for a kick in the pants to live out your potential, you're in the right place!

Mar 2, 2018

Trust me when I tell ya, I didn’t always do things like this. I was that one-woman show who believed she could do it and I lived like that for a few years… I was white knuckling my business and thus white knuckling my life and until I started to loosen my grip on control, I couldn’t see my way out.

BUT (there is always a but...) Once I started outsourcing, I couldn’t stop.

Five ways you can outsource your life and claim back your time! I’d love to remind you guys that time is a non-renewable resource but money? It’s renewable. If you want to have a full life you have to make sure you’re spending each day filling it with the things that light you up and inspire you. Of course, you can do a lot of these things on your own but that doesn’t mean you have to.

Here are 5 ways we are outsourcing our lives this year and let me tell you, it’s been worth every single penny.

Feb 28, 2018

Let's be real, our mindset sets the tone for our entire workday, productivity levels, and ultimately, what we achieve. Everything begins and ends with our thoughts and beliefs. Which is exactly why I felt the need to address some common mental blocks for business, entrepreneurship, and heck, just your life in general. If you are looking to grow your business, leverage your social media strategy, and take your life to the next level, you're in the right place.

Today, I am digging into the 5 big lies that are holding YOU back from living your true potential-- in entrepreneurship, in starting a business, harnessing social media, seeking balance, etc. . From outsourcing to social media, all the way from our productivity tactics and commitments, I am shedding some light on how YOU can be a source of inspiration, motivation, and accomplishment. I am telling you what exactly is holding you back from living your dreams. This may just be our most powerful episode yet...

Feb 26, 2018

Have you ever wondered how someone makes their Instagram feed cohesive? Or how a blog post can be so visually beautiful? Today, we are teaching YOU how to build a brand, leverage social media strategy, and carve a name for yourself. Today's guest, Beth Kirby is one of the most creative women I know. In this episode, Beth told us her incredible story of discovering she had bipolar disorder, and how the messy times of her life brought her to here-- where she is an amazingly talented photographer, cook, teacher, and the lady-boss-behind-the-curtain at Local Milk, the award-winning food, travel, and lifestyle blog.

When she's not in the kitchen she spends her time teaching other creative entrepreneurs how to tell visual stories, harness the power of social media, and turn their passions into a living. Her passion is helping people eat well, live well, and work well, and to do it all with mindfulness, ambition, and joy.

I have always DREAMED of having Beth on Goal Digger. She is an absolute game changer in the social media world-- her images, content, and messages are truly so rare and she cranks out beautiful, meaningful content and images daily! Her content creation and image curation are truly breathtaking- which is why I couldn’t resist inviting her on to pick her brilliant brain for ALL things photography, styling, and curating a meaningful visual. This episode is so important to anyone on Instagram, with a blog, working in styling or branding-- basically, this episode for EVERYONE. Without further adou, Beth Kirby!

Feb 23, 2018

With recent changes in the newsfeed, it’s important to pivot, be resilient and adaptable and figure out a game plan for rocking social well. Recently Facebook announced that the algorithm would be changing again. The algorithm will de-prioritize content shared by media and businesses in favor of that produced by friends and family. What does this mean? We have to be social on social media and today let’s rock through 5 ways to put the social back in social media! From Facebook groups to going "LIVE" all the way to creating true relationships, we are covering it all!

If you're ready to put the social back into social media and to really boost that engagement not just for yourself but the people you love to follow!

It's time to put some intention behind how you’re showing up online to make the biggest impact and to really implement true strategy into the hours you’re spending on your apps each day!

Feb 21, 2018

Ahhhh, sweet, sweet social media. There is simply nothing better than FREE advertising and outreach, and social media strategy allows you to do that each and every day.

...But it’s not always straight-forward. There are many tips and tricks that get engagement, turn followers into clients, and using social media to not only get likes but to drive your bottom line.

Which is why I am SO excited about today’s episode where I am digging into the real life, behind the scenes of those little apps. This is another session of Ask Jenna Anything dedicated SOLELY to one topic: social media! Today I am answering YOUR most raw, real-life questions about social media. Ready to get social? Let's do it!

Tune in to hear me answer these questions below!

Jess W: I'd like to know your posting social media workflow with multiple projects facing close deadlines. I'm drowning!

Stephanie M: what do you do to prep yourself for doing live videos? I hate being on video, but I know FB live and Instagram stories are a great way to connect with your followers.

Amanda P: Also, I'd love to hear more about your travels. That topic has kid of lost its light in your message, but I'd be interested in what/how you pack, and what you do and see!

Kate S (Instagram): I have such a hard time sharing who I actually *am* instead of pictures of my work? I know I need to, but I struggle... Advice on this?

Lauren L: I could listen to you talk about content creation all day long! I know you already have some episodes that cover this, but it doesn't sound to the rest of us repetitive to keep hearing about it

Fuel Goodness (Instagram): would love to know how you’ve grown your social media accounts

Fuel Goodness also asked: would love to know how you leverage your social media to get (paid) sponsorships?

Danielle asks: What do you think is your secret superpower that made people resonate with you? Oh goodness, I mean, naps are my true superpower but I think the ability to show that I'm not perfect in a way that encourages other people to "come as they are" into life, online, and definitely on Instagram. It's about revealing the "imperfections" without making it feel heavy or messy for others but instead it being a gentle reminder that they aren't alone.

Rachael says: I know you say your main focus is on growing your email list, can you explain why it’s still important to grow your social media following and why you still believe in the power of things like Instagram in your biz?

Lauren Nicole: Yesterday, I was listening to your podcast about growing a community on social media but I keep coming back to the same question. It all sounds great if I were selling a service, but I am *trying* to grow a brand/company and am not selling a service but a product? How do you put yourself in your business, make it feel personal, but not have it look "an artist that makes things".

Courtney K (Instagram): what are your thoughts on sponsored content? how do you navigate it? Episode 103

Courtney K Also Asked: how do you maintain authenticity while following sponsored post rules and not being like #sponsored 24/7?

And, as always, if you have questions for me, I am CONSTANTLY checking our Goal Digger Podcast Insiders FB group and Goal Digger Instagram account to make sure I am answering YOUR questions. You guys are the fire behind this podcast, and I want to hear from y-o-u!

Let’s call it like it is: working from home sounds WAY more glamorous than it really is... and if we are being completely honest, there are some challenges that come along with the "work from home" lifestyle.

I remember the first week I worked from home. I’m pretty sure I didn’t get out of bed, had Grey’s Anatomy on 24/7 and even brought breakfast into bed and ate on a little tray…. Yeah, that didn’t last long because I realized in order to be successful, I actually had to WORK from home. In fact, if you work from home often, you know how hard it can be to peel away from the life stuff happening in the house and dig into powerful, meaningful work. If you're looking for productivity hacks, motivation tips, and tactics that'll help you improve your life in general, look no more! Let’s talk about how you can be more productive working where you live and living where you work. You ready?

Wow, hitting “publish” on these episodes always make me feel a little nervous (...and so stinkin’ vulnerable). But I think the internet needs more real, more raw, and I’m going to do my best to fill that void.

TODAY’S NEW EPISODE: “10 Things I’m Afraid To Tell You…”

From our fertility journey, my finances, (um, my hygiene habits), one of the hardest parts of our marriage, andddd…. One last one that I’m actually kind of afraid to type in a caption.

I feel like it’s time again to reach out and talk about some of the behind the scenes things that are happening in my life that I haven’t really put out into the world: for fear, because of insecurity, or just because they were too close to my heart so share on such a public forum… until now.

When I wrote down goals for this podcast before I had recorded a single episode, she was at the top of my list for hopes on who to interview. It’s no secret that Joanna Gaines is my spirit animal, after watching her for years, she’s become a woman of inspiration in my life.

You might know her as the queen of shiplap, the wife of Chip, the mom of four littles, and the mastermind behind Magnolia. Beyond just being an HGTV goddess, I’ve watched and learned so much from Joanna Gaines and since my biggest goal when starting this whole show was to have her come on the podcast, I figured I’d record an episode about what she’s taught me over the years just from watching her navigate the growth their business has seen.

We are covering all the Joanna Gaines basics: being so authentically yourself, navigating living a “public” life with grace, chasing your faith, becoming a branding guru, and .... (any guesses on that 5th one?!)

Beyond the shiplap and perfectly styled kitchens, I’ve been watching a woman who is changing lives through her ability to create connections while still maintaining what’s most important to her and through listening to the calls she is getting as her empire continues to grow and expand. I think we should all tag Joanna on Instagram and get her attention, because I’d love to hear her own take on her journey and what it’s looked like as they’ve navigated each season in the public eye!

What do you say, Goal Diggers? Cheers to THE lady, Joanna Gaines!
