PODCASTING FOR DUMMIES. If you're considering starting a podcast, wondering what goes into podcasting, or just curious about our behind-the-scenes of this show, this episode is for you! I want to be open about the nitty gritty process of starting a podcast from A to Z and let you in on how you can start one of your own!

I’ll admit, starting a podcast is one of the vaguest things in the world. I spent so many days on google trying to find details on things like “How do I get onto iTunes” or “who makes my intro?” It’s still a relatively new “thing”, so you feel a little lost when starting. How do I pick my topic? Demographic? Show name? How the heck do I get a theme song? How do I record it?

Safe to say there are a million and one questions and today we will be covering how we started this “little” show that’s grown into one of the biggest pieces of my business. It’s crazy to think that this started less than two years ago and we have already cracked the top 5 out of ALL business shows and top 50 of ALL podcasts. For reference there are over a billion subscriptions spread across 250,000 unique podcasts in more than 100 languages, and that more than 8 million episodes have been published in the iTunes Store to date. Like, that’s insane. But in order to thrive, you have to start with a foundation, and today I am going to teach you how to do JUST that!

Wow, wow, wow. This guest. Her mission… Brit Barron is the co-founder of Other Dreamers Culture Consultants and a speaker, writer and diversity and inclusion trainer. Brit spends a lot of time thinking about and talking about how race, gender and sexuality and spirituality interact with our everyday lives and our work. Brit is obsessed with finding new ways to connect people and things that have been told they should not go together. She has a bachelors and masters degrees in psychology and is probably already analyzing me as I type this!

Brit has spoken all over the country, she has a TED talk about Beyonce and race in America and she is ready to share her expertise with you! I was introduced to you by the women dynamo Emily Sexton (remember her LIFE CHANGING episode?!). Emily consulted Brit to ensure that her business was casting a wide net and ensuring that every woman felt heard, seen, and valued. And wow, is Brit the perfect person for the job! In this episode you will learn how to easily cultivate a network of connection and support, pioneer change and inclusion in your workplace (...and your life!), find genuine community, tackle the “hard” topics, and how to truly live a life that exemplifies “community over competition.” You in?

"At the end of the day, we are BETTER TOGETHER than separate. Governments with more women involved have higher rates of peace. Companies with higher amounts of people with color in leadership, do better economically because they reach more markets... so yes, we are better together. But first, we have to deal with why those people weren't at the table to begin with." Simply put, Brit knows her stuff. She is an expert on inclusion: from her unique personal perspective to statistics all the way to tangible action steps, Brit is reminding us every day that "people matter." Always, and in all ways.

This. Woman. Boundary-breaking, unifying, inspiring... every possible positive adjective I could write. She is something so rare and the way that she talks about things that matter is so inspiring to me. Goal Diggers, the magic in this episode could change your life- and I know I always say this, but you cannot miss it. Like really, click "play" now. Okay? Okay :)

SEO. Search Engine Optimization. It makes many of us want to put our head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist, am I right? I’m guilty of having done that for years until I realized it’s not as scary as we’ve made it out to be and there are some major benefits that can come from some simple implementation on your end. So today I want to break it down and demystify this topic for all of you - because it’s time to put some strategy behind our search engine results.

Search Engine Optimization basically means the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine. SEO can be a really complex topic to cover (especially on a podcast!) so my goal today is breaking it down to the basics, tell you where best to invest your time, and prove to you that it’s not so scary so you take action and get started. In my experience, even starting out small with a simple strategy can make a big impact on the traffic that is coming to your website…. Because what good is a website if no one knows it exists?

Let me give it to ya straight: this blog post is only the outline of this show. To get the full impact of this show, I recommend reading along with this blog and writing down all the specific details to maximize your SEO journey.

If you hit play on this episode, my guess is you already know you need to be doing this - so let’s not ignore it anymore - ok?

I have been waiting to have this guest on for what feels like FOREVER. Jen Gotch is the epitome of a girl boss as she founded ban.do with a friend in 2008 and with no prior business experience, was able to transform it from a small, vintage, one-of-a-kind hair accessories company into a multimillion-dollar brand within years. after a long (and winding) road of jobs that led her to where she is today, she’s now the chief creative officer and fearless leader of the ban.do team.

On top of that, she is a fierce mental health advocate and I am so excited to hear her inspiring messages surrounding both business and life. In this episode, you will learn how Jen got her amazing start to ban.do, but also why her current mission is spreading awareness about mental health. Find out how why Jen thinks entrepreneurs are specifically challenged by mental health concerns, tangible way that we can be there for one another, how to actually TALK about such an “uncomfortable topic”, create change, and create community. Goal Diggers, this episode is about to remind you that everything you are feeling today is OKAY. You are not alone and we are all in this together.

Whoa, vulnerability alert…. NEW EPISODE: The 10 Biggest Mistakes I’ve Made In My Business

I’m a true believer that taking action in our businesses is one of the most important priorities we can make. I hear business owners agonize over what to do so much that they become stuck and don’t make any decision at all…. but that’s not me.

The worst thing that can happen is that we will make a mistake, learn from it, grow and move on. To prove this, today I’m going to talk about the 10 BIGGEST mistakes in my business and how I’ve worked through each mistake, used it to help me shape who I am and my beloved biz.

I’m not about only putting my best foot forward, hiding behind highlight reels or pretending to have it all together… I’d rather be an open book to help you learn from my experience. Whew, this episode is no joke… You ready?

(This episode was so vulnerable for me so please tell me your biggest takeaway below so I can feel like I didn’t just share all of that for nothing!)

Goal Diggers, I am legitimately GIDDY to share this episode with you. Today, i am introducing you to one of the most magnetic women I know. Emily Sexton is a force to be reckoned with and I’ve been able to experience her magic first-hand in my mastermind group this year.

With a past career on Wall Street as a Vice President of Communications and Change Management, Emily brings her ‘win them over’ know-how, delightful enthusiasm and every day wit to encourage American consumers to use their purchasing power for good. From Wall Street to the streets with no name, you can now find Emily traveling in developing nations to find gorgeous new goods for her Downtown Raleigh Boutique + online shop, The Flourish Market. She is an overly obsessed dog mom, an unlikely Crossfitter, a contributor to The Huffington Post, and an avid believer that every woman is worthy of influence.

Today, Emily is going to teach us her signature topic: How to Influence Others. Goal Diggers, I cannot emphasize how important this episode is. Whether you are an entrepreneur, college student, or single mom, there is value in knowing how to communicate well, own your story, and connect with others in a powerful way. Goal diggers, I CANNOT wait for you to harness your inner voice and learn from this one in a million woman....

YUP, THE TOPIC NO ONE EVER TALKS ABOUT… I’M GOIN’ THERE: How To Pay Yourself as an Entrepreneur

So you own your own business which means you’re the boss, and as the boss - you get to determine how much money you make. Awesome, right? Considering how often I get asked this question, it seems to be more stressful than awesome for most business owners.

If you ask the average entrepreneur what they make, they’ll likely tell you their profits for the year. “I made six figures last year” often means the BUSINESS made six figures. But what did you, the business owner pay yourself? And how do you come up with that number? And what should your business goals be to align with your personal salary goals?

Safe to say there are a lot of things to consider and I wanted to break down how we’ve figured this out (while working through the seasons of crazy and the seasons of slow). When I first started, I realized quickly that I would have seasons where I would make a lot of money and then seasons where it would be nothing and I knew that in order to be smart with my money, I wanted to figure out a way to make sure I felt comfortable in all seasons....

Want to find out how I did it?? Click the link in bio and get ready to learn how to ensure there are always $$$ in that bank account! (These tips and tricks will surprise you!)

ATTENTION: THERE ARE RICHES IN THE NICHES: Danielle Walker is the beloved author of three New York Times best-selling cookbooks-- After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and suffering for many years, Danielle found health through dietary changes and shared her stories and recipes with the world...

With her openness and focused brand, she became a beacon of hope in the autoimmune world, and has been a leader in the Paleo and gluten-free movement for nearly ten years.

While I am a fellow gluten-free foodies, what also captivated me about Danielle is how she serves a niche audience so well. Not everyone suffers from autoimmune disease or intense dietary restrictions, but those who do, need someone to trust! Danielle has flawlessly created a thriving business that serves a smaller, niche audience.

Today, I am going to get the low-down on how we can all develop our own “signature” expertize, serve our clients well, and turn YOUR niche into a full-blown biz! If you think you must #DoItAll for your business to survive… this episode will change your mind.

Ready to save HOURS every week?! We need to flip the script and instead of creating new content 90% of the time and marketing them 10%, we should be creating less and marketing them more. Last year we created over 50 new opt ins! Growing our email email list was our number one priority and so we created a ton of new material that quite honestly, didn’t all need to be made. I recently talked about how to create less content with more impact and today I want to take it a step further and show from start to finish how we continuously share one opt-in. This year we’re prioritizing working smarter (not harder) and have come up with a plan on how to share what’s already been created and get the most mileage out of our existing content. Whether you’re like us and are content creating machines, or if you have limited content and sometimes don’t know what else to share, today’s episode is going to walk you through 5 ways to promote your opt-in.

The sky is the limit with creatively sharing your content! Here are just a few ideas I can think of off the top of my head: create an FB ad pointing to your freebie, promote it on a podcast, collaborate with another freebie, target a different audience, etc. The point? I hope this episode inspired you to make the most of your content and work more on SHARING it to get the most bang for your buck! Goal Diggers, take this as your sign that it's officially time to work smarter, not harder.

If you’re pleasing everyone you’re probably pleasing no one - including yourself.

Here’s the thing, you are not going to be able to please everyone. These people that take the time to write you a mean message? They aren’t your people. Focus on the ones that are and the fact that everyone is not going to love you or your message is ok. It’s more than ok.

The more I do this, the more eyes I have on me, my life, my body, my business. Putting yourself out there open YOU up for criticism but I have to remind myself that when you’re doing the big, hard word, people will notice and sometimes it won’t be the RIGHT people but when you can sincerely learn to focus on the good, to keep your heart open, and to protect your energy to be poured into the right things, you’ll become more convicted in your message and you’ll be more prepared to fight for what you really believe in.

“You’re fat.”

“Unhealthy”

“Enough with the underwear pics… you’re a smart girl, you have more things to say, unfollowing.”

“Do you know that your eyebrows are way darker than your hair? You should change that.”

“How did YOU land such a good looking guy?”

“10 emails in 3 days? Go F** yourself. Way to f’in annoy potential clients. F’in idiot.”

“You’re way too aggressive, I’m out.”

You might think it’s all rainbows and butterflies over here in Jenna Kutcher land, and it’s true - we have the most supportive, loving and just all around amazing tribe. But. I’ve found where there is a success, ugly things can creep in and try to attack too. I love to say “More followers, more problems” and a lot of times, we’re fighting battles behind our screens that people never see. I want to dedicate this episode to the haters today and share how I handle criticism.

To prove I’m not invincible, I thought I’d read you some emails that have landed in my inbox. These were hard to find because my team does a good job protecting me from them, but here are a few we could dig up: (I’m thankful that we had to actually dig to find these because it’s a testament to the great people we have supporting us!!)

This episode is dedicated to getting you through the harsh feedback, trolling, and haters. This is for business women, for you, for me. Let's do this.

SURPRISE! Did you know that you can make a profit AND an impact with your business?

The two are not mutually exclusive and today we are talking to the beautiful and brilliant Jess Ekstrom, the founder and CEO of Headbands of Hope, a company she started as a junior in college in 2012. For every headband sold, a headband is given to a child with cancer. The company has been featured on the TODAY Show, Vanity Fair, Seventeen, Good Morning America and People Magazine.

These headbands have been worn and supported by celebrities such as Lauren Conrad, Lea Michele, and so many more! But most importantly, they've donated over 200,000 headbands to every children's hospital in the United States and 15 countries. Jess was named the Women's Health Magazine Ultimate Game Changer in 2017 and also received 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award from Atlantic BT. AND A Huffington Post article named her a "limit breaking female founder".

In this episode, you'll find out that you shouldn't have to choose between making a living and making a difference. She's passionate about helping others find those collision points and live a more purposeful life. Goal Diggers, without further adieu, Jess Ekstrom!

CALLING ALL INTROVERTS. I get it, social media can seem like it is reserved for the extroverted, the larger than life, the charismatic. But, friends, you belong- ad you can THRIVE, even if you are more quiet and composed than the others.

There are few people who serve their audience as well as this woman, and I can’t wait for her to teach you about what it TRULY means to wholeheartedly serve your followers (even when you are more shy than not).

Morgan Harper Nichols is an artist and designer, who specializes in making work for people and their stories. Her song, “Storyteller” has garnered over 1 million Spotify plays and her self-published book of poetry by the same title is a #1 Amazon Bestseller in Inspirational Poetry. Morgan lives in Los Angeles, and has made her life’s work about creating for the stories of others, through music, words, art, and design.

She started writing for certain people that came to her mind, however, she would rarely share any of it. When a blog post that she wrote for a group of young women she knew was pinned on Pinterest more than 200k times, she began to explore the many ways that a message could spread beyond what she thought could possible, and she has been creating for others full time ever since. Morgan now works as a writer, designer, and travels as a speaker and performer.

Safe to say, this woman does it all, and with such grace and heart-- I can’t wait for her to teach you about fully utilizing social media to expand your brand, stay in your comfort zone, and turn your followers into FANS.

You have so much to learn from this woman, and I can’t wait for you to hear what she has to say. Goal Diggers, welcome Morgan Harper Nichols!
